"The freedom of art is more than an ideal. If, despite the small chance of success, the profession of artist is so popular, it is because it offers the prospect of a labour that is apparently free of narrow specialization, allowing the artist, like heroes in the movies, to endow work and life with their own meanings. Equally for the viewers of art, there is a corresponding freedom in appreciating the purposeless play of ideas and forms, not in slavishly attempting to divine artists' intentions, but allowing the work to elicit thoughts and sensations that connect with their own experiences."

Janet Zweig

Janet Zweig in her work, Mind Over Matter, programmed the following sentences into a computer which generated all of the possible combinations of words possible:
"I think therefore I am." --Descartes
"I am what I am." --Popeye
"I think I can." --The Little Engine That Could
To see the combinations look here.

Thomas Ruff
I was inspired to rediscover Thomas Ruff's work this week after reading his interview with Joerg Colberg, from Conscientious. A memorable quote was, Thomas Ruff: "The images or themes come from my daily life. I read newspapers, watch TV, surf the Web and meet people. When I notice or run into something that I won't get out of my head again I start to work on it." At the moment I am really digging his jpegs series, a series of jpegs that he pulled from the internet and then blew up to enormous proportions, exaggerating the pixelation that occurs when one enlarges a digital image.
This process is similar to what I am currently doing in my work, especially in my Skype Portrait series, a series of images taken during video chats with friends and family.

Wafaa Bilal

Wafaa Bilal is an Iraqi artist. His latest project Domestic Tension, explores the relationship of American to Iraqi's, the artist has set up living quarters in the Flatfile gallery, where people can view him 24/7 via a webcam. However, there is a catch, attached to the web cam is a paintball gun, which online viewers can fire at the artist. I find the project to be quite clever and a stark commentary on anti-Iraqi sentiment. To read more about the project check out this post at We Make Money Not Art.

Aleksandra Domanovic

Aleksandra Domanovic is an artist whose work I quite enjoy. I am particularly fond of her videos: Anhedonia(a video collage of imagery put to the soundtrack of Annie Hall), D,e,g,a(dots of images that are triggered with music to form an always evading portrait), and New Me (the music video for Jamie Lidell's song New Me). Check her out!!!
