Joel Sternfeld

Yesterday, I got the chance to hear a truly great photographer, Joel Sternfeld, speak about his work. The lecture titled Brief Survey took place at the lovely American Academy in Berlin, which was held in conjunction with his upcoming opening The Geography of No Place: American Utopias at Buchmann Galerie. It was a enriching talk and really great to hear one of my favorite photographers speak about his work.

At the end of the talk he offered an interesting theory that all great photographers create a survey of something in threat. They recognize the temporal nature of something and have the sense to immortalize it before it's gone.

"Picture an ideal world and photograph that."
